Tell us about your experience on this programme
Traveling to Japan and South Korea was a life-changing experience that exceeded every expectation I had before embarking on the journey. I first discovered the opportunity through my university’s study abroad program, and as someone who had always dreamed of visiting these countries, I knew this was my chance.
South Korea held a particularly special place in my heart because it was my first time visiting, and I had been studying the Korean language for years. Stepping off the plane in Seoul felt like stepping into a dream–a surreal moment when all the effort I had poured into learning the language and immersing myself in the culture finally became tangible. Walking through the bustling streets of Myeongdong, hearing Korean conversations all around me, and recognizing words and phrases I had studied was deeply fulfilling. It was as if the pages of my textbooks had come to life, and I felt an immense sense of gratitude and accomplishment.
The program offered a perfect balance of structured activities and personal exploration. In South Korea, I visited landmarks like Gyeongbokgung Palace, where I dressed in a traditional Hanbok, and the lively markets of Gwangjang, where I could practice speaking Korean while buying local crafts and street food. The surreal experience of ordering food in Korean and receiving a warm smile of understanding from locals was a small but significant victory for me. In Japan, I explored the serene temples of Kyoto, marveled at the neon lights of Tokyo, and participated in a traditional tea ceremony, which deepened my appreciation for the country–a balance of tradition and modernity.
While I faced challenges like navigating Japan’s complex transit system and grappling with the nuances of the Japanese language, each obstacle became an opportunity to learn and grow. The accommodations throughout the trip were both comfortable and welcoming, offering a mix of modern convenience and cultural authenticity that made me feel at ease after long days of exploration.
Were you satisfied with the cross-cultural experiences this programme provided?
This program offered incredible cross-cultural experiences. In South Korea, my language skills allowed me to actively engage in traditions like kimchi-making and Hanbok-wearing. In Japan, though language was a barrier, I explored tea ceremonies, Zen gardens, and modern districts with curiosity, gaining deep cultural appreciation.
What skills do you think this experience helped you gain, and how so? How might this differ from the experience you could otherwise gain in New Zealand?
This experience enhanced adaptability and time management through Korea’s “hurry hurry” culture. Navigating its fast-paced environment taught me efficiency and quick decision-making–skills less emphasized in New Zealand’s more relaxed lifestyle. It highlighted the value of balancing urgency with mindfulness in daily life.
Did you encounter any particular challenges in preparing for or during this programme that might be important for future students to be aware of?
One challenge I encountered during the program was managing food costs, especially when I wasn’t feeling particularly hungry but still had to adhere to scheduled meals. Allowing students more flexibility in meal planning, such as optional group meals or recommendations for affordable local options, could ease this issue. Additionally, the packed schedule left little free time for personal exploration or rest, which can be overwhelming, especially in vibrant cities like Seoul or Tokyo. Including more unscheduled time would give students a chance to recharge and explore their interests, making the experience even more fulfilling.
You rated this experience as one you were “highly likely to recommend” to a friend. What gives you the confidence to do so?
Reflecting on the journey, I realized how much it enriched my perspective on the world and fulfilled a lifelong dream. For anyone considering a similar program, I wholeheartedly recommend it–embrace the challenges, cherish the small victories, and let the experience transform you.
