Tell us about your experience on this programme
One of the most rewarding aspects was building relationships with the villagers, particularly through shared meals and storytelling. Listening to their histories and perspectives enriched my understanding of their way of life and the challenges they face, such as access to education and healthcare in remote settings. In turn, I shared elements of my own background, creating a genuine exchange of knowledge and values.
Were you satisfied with the cross-cultural experiences this programme provided?
During my 16-day stay in the rural, remote indigenous Fijian village of Nataveya, I was deeply satisfied with the cross-cultural experiences this program provided. Immersing myself in the daily lives of the villagers offered unparalleled insights into Fijian culture, traditions, and community values.Living in Nataveya allowed me to engage in meaningful cultural exchanges, including participating in traditional kava ceremonies, learning the art of weaving mats, and assisting with farming activities. These hands-on experiences fostered a deep appreciation for the villagers’ resourcefulness and connection to their land. Additionally, the communal lifestyle and emphasis on collective well-being were profoundly inspiring, as they highlighted the importance of interdependence and mutual respect.
What skills do you think this experience helped you gain, and how so? How might this differ from the experience you could otherwise gain in New Zealand?
This experience in the Fijian village of Nataveya helped me develop a range of valuable skills, including adaptability, cross-cultural communication, and teamwork. Living in a remote, resource-limited environment required me to adjust quickly to unfamiliar conditions, such as living without modern conveniences, which enhanced my resilience and problem-solving abilities. Engaging with the villagers also strengthened my interpersonal skills, as I navigated language barriers and learned to communicate effectively through non-verbal cues and shared activities. The collaborative nature of village life taught me the importance of teamwork and collective responsibility, as everyone contributed to tasks like farming, cooking, and community projects. These skills are distinct from those I could gain in New Zealand, where the pace of life is faster and more individualistic.
Did you encounter any particular challenges in preparing for or during this programme that might be important for future students to be aware of?
The biggest difficulty that I experienced was adapting to the vegetable-based gastronomy – which is very different to what I was used to here in New Zealand. Although this was a challenge, the food was delicious and we learnt about where and how each plant was grown, harvested, and cooked. This experience was transformative, as it not only broadened my worldview but also deepened my sense of empathy and cultural sensitivity. The program provided an authentic, immersive opportunity to bridge cultural gaps and build lasting connections, leaving me with a profound respect for the resilience and warmth of the Nataveya community.
