This experience offers a unique opportunity: one to bridge the past and the future, to experience the vibrancy of the subcontinent, and to explore how one of the world’s fastest-growing economies is redefining the rules of innovation.
Personal Goals: Widening the Lens
My academic and vocational interests have always converged at the intersection of the natural world, creativity, and business. Through my studies and extracurriculars, I have strived to balance these domains, but I believe India will offer a masterclass in how to truly integrate them. My objective is to expand my horizon of what is possible, to witness what it takes to stand-out and be an entrepreneur in such a high-velocity economy. From the ingenuity of the street-side Jugaad to the intricacies of complex fiscal policy, the opportunity absorb knowledge is vast. By treating the entire ecosystem as my classroom I hope to gain valuable insight that will inform decision-making long after I return home.
Expectations: A Dynamic Canvas
I am excited to experience both the perpetual motion and commerce of its lively, bustling streets, and the world-changing, cutting-edge technology being developed within its premier institutions. Beyond the innovation pipeline, I am looking forward to immersing myself in the rich cultural and historical tapestry of India. I anticipate that the greatest challenge will be one of perspective: striking a balance between the macro and the micro. My aim is to observe deeply enough to discern meaningful patterns, while maintaining a field of vision broad enough to capture the immense volume of opportunity that India presents.
Future Learning: The Winning Formula
As a nation of nearly 1.5 billion people, the sheer scale of India creates a crucible for excellence; when millions are competing in the same markets, innovation a part of daily life. I look forward to studying the art of differentiation and witnessing how India’s kaleidoscopic diversity acts as the ultimate catalyst for this creativity. In a melting pot where languages, cultures, and demographics collide, ideas are constantly stress-tested and refined.
The View from Aotearoa:
While I am eager to absorb all that India offers, I am equally conscious of the unique framework we bring as New Zealanders. Our approach to innovation is anchored in indigenous values that act as a compass amidst the chaos. The concept of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) ensures that our pursuit of progress doesn’t come at the cost of the natural world. Whanaungatanga (connection) and Manaakitanga (kindness), remind us that behind the numbers there are people. By carrying these values with them, one can better contextualise the lessons of the Indian ecosystem to ensure they are relevant for application back home.
Chalo Delhi!
