Introduction

Ola! I’m Harry and I’ll be studying at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado in the metropolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

I’m a fourth-year Bachelor of Global Studies/Arts student, majoring in Global Politics and Human Rights and Communication. It’s a wordy title, I know. But it captures my interests quite well. I’m fascinated by global issues and how they impact the lives of everyday people.

Although this will be my first time stepping foot in Brazil, it will be my second time traveling to South America. As a seventeen-year-old, I completed a one-year exchange in Chile. It was that trip that sparked my love for the culture, which is what led me to Latin American studies at the University of Auckland. I’ve grown a lot since then, and I’m hopeful that what I’ve studied at uni will help me appreciate this trip much more. I’m excited to learn a third language, as, unlike their Spanish-speaking neighbours, Brazilians speak Portuguese. But I’m just as pumped to learn a bit of capoeira and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This time, I won’t be traveling alone, either. My partner Sofi and I are both going together. We can’t wait to share our experiences, and hope they can serve as a useful guides if you’re interested in going on exchange.
