Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Latin America, Indigenous Rights & Histories in Brazil

Introduction

Kia ora koutou! My name is Lucy. I am 19 years old and currently studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Screen and Media Studies at the University of Waikato. My family is Canadian, but I was born and raised in Whakatāne, New Zealand.

I applied for the Indigenous Rights and Histories in Brazil as an opportunity that will shift my worldview and strengthen my core values.  I want to be challenged and put myself in new situations.  I want to make a difference in overcoming real problems around important issues affecting people’s lives.

I’m most excited to learn and experience the different aspects that intertwine and connect us all across our different cultures, primarily my own culture, the culture of my fellow group mates, the culture of Brazil and the culture of the indigenous community we visit while in Brazil.

My current study, Screen and Media Production will allow me to express myself creatively on important topics and issues. The art of film and moving image has the ability to reach people emotionally and intellectually and get people thinking about issues.  No matter what I learn throughout this program, it will strengthen my empathy and understanding of others and my love for sharing stories, knowledge, and experiences.
