Is the kiwi or a unicorn a better national animal?

Yes, you read that right: the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland. But I definitely think it fits the mystical vibe, as my new home for the semester is filled with medieval castles, palaces and everything to do with Harry Potter. My name is Malisha, and I will be one of your digital ambassadors, talking about my journey as an exchange student at the University of Edinburgh! A bit about me: I am a New Zealand-born Sri Lankan in my third year studying Civil and Environmental Engineering.

To give a summary of orientation week, it was jam-packed with fun and overwhelming at the same time. With Edinburgh being the greenest city in the UK, there are many outdoor BBQs, and I did a hike up Arthurs Seat for some stunning views. A club expo runs for 3 days because there are over 300 clubs in the uni! The range of clubs is immense, from a soup society to a bad film society and even a Ryan Air roulette. ✈ I am overloaded with free tote bags and flyers, but I did snag a free jumper from a spin-the-wheel 😎. The Edinburgh University Students Association runs poster, clothes and plant sales and, in addition to that, has so many events to explore the city ALL FOR FREE. (Make sure to reserve tickets early as they sell out quick 💯).

Having to adjust as a Kiwi moving to the other side of the world was a little difficult. Mentally doubling every price you see and want to cry because why is an umbrella $12 nzd. All the supermarkets are different, so goodbye Paknsave and hello Lidl. The weather has mood swings here as it changes so often within a single day, so I carry a raincoat & umbrella in my bag and layer my clothes.☂

But after the adjustment period, Edinburgh had been absolutely amazing. Some of my favourite events have been going to the mountaineering club’s bonfire night, a brown girl society picnic and trying Cèilidh dancing! Even though I am very uncoordinated, Cèilidh is a traditional Scottish gathering where everyone dances in partners in large group ensembles.

Top Tip: Check out @esnedinburgh. They are the international student network and run trips and social events each week for us exchange students! I have made many friends by attending these events, so I highly recommend them.

Stay tuned for my next blog post, where I can talk about my accommodation + classes + more on exchange life ❤
