My time in Colombia was nothing short of incredible. Before leaving, I had apprehensions due to the negative perceptions often associated with the country, such as safety concerns and drug-related issues. However, this trip proved to be a remarkable experience. It was exceptionally well organised, with a local producer/chaperone guiding us and an excellent translator. Their expertise allowed us to explore the country’s rich culture and ensured our safety by steering us away from potential risks. We had a wonderful time sharing our dance philosophies and research with the students from the University de Valle and learning from local teachers, indigenous practitioners and communities.

The warm reception and enthusiasm from students and teachers on the receiving end highlighted the significance of preserving and sharing our culture. This exchange bridged cultural differences, fostering a sense of connection and openness, and underscored the value of keeping our culture alive through mediums like music, conversation and movement.

I felt very honoured to immerse myself in the local culture, from connecting with students and teachers to dance and food to the famous Colombian coffee. Some of the brightest highlights:

The interactions and dance performance from a group of Students from Buenaventura.
Sharing my work and research in a workshop with 40+ students – and having them be open and responsive.
Salsa Dancing.
Salsa Show at Mulato.
Students and Teachers in Bogata.
Visiting Black Ground.
Visiting the Coffee Plantation.
Views of the city.
Community Dance at Loma de la Cruz.

Of course, these are only a few of the highlights – there were so many incredible moments that there is no way to list them all. I am immensely grateful for this unforgettable experience, and I recommend South America, especially Cali, as a place to build visits and cross-cultural connections, provided you have local guidance. This journey will remain with me for a long time. I cannot emphasise enough what an excellent experience it was, and I still think about it and reminisce daily.
