Founded with a vision to create employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, Mitti Cafe serves not just food and beverages but a vivid sense of consideration and compassion. From training and hiring individuals with disabilities, Mitti Cafe embraces personalised, holistic training approaches for its workers through discovering meaningful work for its employees and providing them with the opportunity to continue growing and upskilling through progression pathways.
We were lucky enough to have Alina Alam, the founder of Mitti Cafe, speak with us about her journey starting Mitti Cafe over lunch. What was electrifying about her presentation was how passionately she spoke about her mission to create employment opportunities for people with disabilities. She shared the touching story of her grandmother, whose experiences with disability inspired her to start this venture. Alina emphasized Mitti Cafe’s holistic approach to training and employment, where individuals start as employees and work their way up, just like a woman called Kirti, who began work on the ground floor, and now is a manager of one of their cafes – enabling her to support her family. Not only does Mitti Cafe blend passion and purpose, but it is significant to note how they meet each individual where they are, ensuring that everyone can contribute and thrive in the environment.
Jaipur Foot: Freedom and Mobility
In the corridors of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the Jaipur Foot symbolises more than just a prosthetic limb—it embodies freedom, mobility, and dignity. With a mission to provide artificial limbs free of cost to those in need, BMVSS has become a global leader in prosthetic technology, enabling individuals to reintegrate into the workforce and regain aspects of their independence. Through its relentless pursuit of restoring mobility and dignity, BMVSS exemplifies the profound impact social enterprises can have in transforming lives and communities.
We were delighted to have met Dr. Pooja Mukul, in the Jaipur Foot clinic, who painted a vivid picture of their mission to provide prosthetic limbs to those in need. She walked us through the creation of Jaipur foot, and how its popularity stems from its unique features that cater specifically to the needs of its users. Unlike other prosthetics, it’s sturdy, water-resistant, and remarkably affordable to manufacture, costing only $50 compared to $12,000 in the US. What’s even more remarkable is that the foot can be customized and fitted for a patient in just a day, offering immediate relief and mobility. She described the materials used, such as microcellular rubber, lightweight willow wood, and nylon cords, which provide flexibility, shock absorption, and a natural appearance resembling human skin. It’s fascinating to see how innovation and dedication have transformed the lives of so many through this prosthetic.
Dr. Mukul stressed their focus on the economically disadvantaged, ensuring that essential healthcare is accessible to all. The vision of restoring mobility and dignity to every amputee resonated deeply, showcasing the transformative impact of their work, and the incredible mobility and freedom the Jaipur Foot offers, enabling amputees to live with greater mobility and foster a space for care and wellbeing.
Manav Gulzar: Nurturing Hearts, Minds, and Futures
Located within the rich city of Ahmedabad, Manav Gulzar is a heartwarming community centre providing opportunity for underprivileged children and local communities living in poverty. From providing educational support and vocational training, to imparting values-based education and promoting community development, Manav Gulzar embodies the spirit of holistic empowerment. Through initiatives focused on education, nutrition, health, and community building, Manav Gulzar exemplifies the transformative potential of social enterprises in fostering sustainable change and inclusive development.
Nimo, a humanitarian and musician working in Manav Gulzar, shared the heartwarming story of this community centre, which is dedicated to uplifting underprivileged children and communities. Nimo emphasized the values of compassion, unity, and harmony that guide Manav Gulzar’s initiatives, creating a nurturing environment where every child can flourish. His journey back into music brought tears to our eyes, especially with such heartfelt lyrics in his song “Planting Seeds.” The message of patience, growth, and acceptance is an emblem of hope and humble reminder of trusting in the seeds being planted and allowing them to flourish in their own time, and in their own unique ways. His lyrics, “I am planting seeds nothing more” reinforces the importance of simply doing our part to do good for the world and letting the rest unfold organically. It’s clear that Manav Gulzar is not just a center but a beacon of light in the community, touching the lives of hundreds daily.
